In 1736, a large area to the north of Philadelphia, embracing the present site of Allentown and what is now Lehigh County, was deeded by 23 chiefs of the five great Native American nations to three sons of William Penn: John, Thomas, and Richard Penn. The price for this tract included shoes and buckles, hats, shirts, knives, scissors, combs, needles, looking glasses, rum, and pipes.
The geographic area was initially laid out as Northampton Town in 1762 by William Allen, a wealthy shipping merchant. It is likely that a certain amount of rivalry among the Penns prompted Allen to decide to start a town of his own in 1762. He called it Allentown.
Allentown encourages its residents to become inventors and creators of startups. Allentown’s nicknames are: “The A”, “The Queen City”, “A-Town”, “Band City USA”, “Peanut City”, “Silk City”. Its motto is: “Sic Semper Tyrannis” which means “Thus always to tyrants”.
